The Death Penalty

It seems appropriate that on Ash Wednesday we recieved the news that Illinois governor Pat Quinn signed the law that abolished the death Penalty in Illinois. In my opinion it was the Christian thing to do and brings this state out of the dark ages. Many people would like to claim that the death penalty was a deterrent to violent crime. Thousands of years of evidence seems to contradict that notion. From where I see it, the only reason for the death penalty is revenge. That is not a Christian virtue. Killing a murderer has never restored the life of his victim. It has also been shown that the cost of the legal efforts to appeal death sentences far exceeds the cost of maintaining a prisoner for life so that is not a valid excuse for capital punishment. Besides, what is the price of a life … any life?
